SEPTEMBER 2023
September 12th
WAA Board Meeting, zoom call at 10 a.m. As a reminder, September and October are the months we begin to transition to the upcoming year in many ways. It is during these months that we nominate, discuss and select Board Members including officers and committee chairs for the upcoming year. Please be thinking about this prior to this month’s meeting.
September 14th
The WAA Monthly Member Meeting will continue at the Arboretum with a social period from 6:00 to 6:30PM, followed by a presentation from 6:30-8:00 PM. An agenda will be posted. This month’s presentation will be by WAA member Charlene (Charlie) Baggett who will provide us with a display of her fine-art outdoor and nature photography.
OCTOBER 2023
October 10th
WAA Board Meeting, zoom call at 10:00AM
October 12th
The WAA Monthly Member Meeting will continue at the Arboretum with a social period from 6:00 to 6:30PM, followed by a presentation from 6:30-8:00 PM. An agenda will be posted. This month’s presentation will be by WAA member Lois Watson. Lois is a well-known WAA member whose paper collage renderings have wowed recent art shows in Wilmington.
October 13 to 15th
Art in the Arboretum This year’s Art in the Arboretum will transition away from the past traditional juried show into a Festival Show.
The plan is to maintain the $10 off discount/refund for WAA members and a 5% take on the Booth Fees. After reviewing the numbers, this would average between $600-$700 donation to the WAA each year, which would be higher than 3 of the past 5 years under the old plan. We will also no longer need to use the WAA panels and lights, and the volunteer’s positions will also be altered.
Under this new format, there will be a lot less labor/volunteers needed from the WAA. Because of no panels, we can eliminate the transportation and setup teams, along with the check-in teams, inspection teams, hanging teams, break-down teams, etc.
The Arboretum would still like to use WAA members as volunteers and ambassadors throughout the two-day festival to check on booths and make sure the artists are OK, have water, bathroom break, etc. We would also like the WAA to help staff certain stations, like entrance and raffle tables shifts. Again overall, this will be a smaller commitment window for the WAA members but will still carry a benefit for WAA members who submit and the WAA group in raising funds.
NOVEMBER 2023

The WAA Monthly Member Meeting will continue at the Arboretum with a social period from 6:00 to 6:30PM, followed by a presentation from 6:30-8:00 pm. An agenda will be posted. This month’s featured presentation will be by WAA member Mari Yamashita deMoya. Mari’s educational background is in art and anthropology, with a specialty in Asian art. Over the years she has held numerous positions relating to art teaching and management in museums, schools and even her own home art business. In addition to being a quilter, Mari is also a potter and painter and will be speaking to us about incorporating Asian fusion motifs into quilting.
